29 October 2021: Nurturing Small Ideas

Session format: Webinar

Date and Time: Friday, 29th October 2021, 16:00 SAST

Presenter: Professor Dick Ng’ambi, Full Professor of Educational Technology, University of Cape Town

Description of the session:

While most big ideas started as small ideas, not much attention has been paid to how small ideas are nurtured and enabled to grow. Many small ideas with potential have often been prematurely abandoned because the thinker lacks the ability or patience to nurture them. In this webinar, I take a critical view of my own practice, and share challenges and successes of nurturing small ideas. In conclusion, I acknowledge the dilemma of small ideas, especially from the Global South that require funding, often from the Global North, to be nurtured. Since success is not always guaranteed, small ideas require time to grow, trusted collaborators to be enhanced and funders ask for more details than is known. Without nurturing, small ideas have no chance at all. It is for this reason that design thinking approaches, and developing proofs of concept become handy.
