24 February: NEAT (New, Emerging and Alternative Tools) Tour Four: Synchronous environments with a spatial metaphor

Session format: Online Tour 4

Date and Time: Thursday, 24 February: 14:00 – 15:00 SAST

Presenter:  Tony Carr from the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at University of Cape Town and e/merge Africa.

Description of the session:

Online environments with spatial metaphors have been around for decades. During the pandemic there has been an explosion in the use and development of such environments as antidotes to Zoom/ Teams fatigue and for some of the familiar interactions in shared space that are part of a normal classroom, office, conference or social event. There are dozens of competing environments which allow participants the ability to move within a space, to mingle and to engage in conversation within hearing distance. In this tour we will start together in Zoom and then meet in Spatialchat, Wonder.me and Welo before returning to Zoom to share our experiences and insights.

Tony says:

“I get really curious about emerging and alternative technologies and I keep coming across some real gems for online and blended learning and teaching. I don’t claim to have expert knowledge of all of these tools so let’s explore together”.
