17 June – 27 June 2014
This two-week online workshop led by Andrew Deacon, Sukaina Walji and Janet Small from the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at University of Cape Town will engage participants in the debates around Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and how universities, especially in Africa, might respond and use the opportunities. The presenters, who are part of the MOOC Task Team based at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) will present a framework for looking at MOOCs as part of a landscape of Higher Education, consider how MOOCs are currently being used by various institutions and discuss how MOOCs and variant MOOC-type courses might influence formal institutional online and blended course design.
The workshop will start with an live online meeting on Wednesday, 18 June from 1-2 pm (SAST/GMT +2) which will be recorded. For those interested in exploring the question more deeply, we will share a number of resources and run a discussion forum where issues can be explored in more detail. We will finish with a follow-up online meeting on Friday 27 June from 1-2 pm (SAST/GMT +2) that will tackle issues that have emerged. Participants will be encouraged to consider and articulate the opportunities and concerns for their own institutions presented by MOOCs.
The presenters are based at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) at the University of Cape Town and comprise the organisation’s MOOC Task Team, which has a remit to research and develop strategies for institutional engagement with MOOCs.

How do MOOCs fit into the frame of traditional, brick-and-mortal higher ed institutions which are only introducing technology? Will general studies courses be potential candidates for MOOCs? What practical steps can be taken to introduce MOOCs in developing contexts?
Hi Jerome, these are interesting questions – hope to see you at the workshop next week!
