saidDear All,
Please find below transcript from Tuesday’s webinar:
Janet Salmons:Welcome everyone! I created a handout, which you can find in the files box. It contains some exercises you can use with your students or group, if you would like to try out these methods.
Janet Salmons:Please introduce yourself- where are you from, do you teach or are you a student?
Janet Salmons:Welcome Kate!
Kate Whittaker:Hello, Great to be back, Janet. I still have to revisit the recording of yesterday’s session.

Janet Salmons:Where are you from?
Janet Salmons:Do you teach?
Kate Whittaker:I’m have a background in library and information management which I’ve used in various educational and government environments over the last 20 years. I enjoy curating content from diverse sources for diverse audiences and I currently freelance on e-learning content development for a publisher and web evaluation for an african health research consortium. I’m based in Cape Town.
Kate Whittaker:I don’t teach per se
Kate Whittaker:but I have participated in or contributed to delivery of educational content development and evaluation of courses.
carla:HI all, Carla here – unfortunately I have been called away to an unexpected meeting, so may only be able to stay for 10 mins
carla:apologies
Janet Salmons:I hope these resources are useful for the audiences you work with- and I see a lot of articles using visual and interactive methods in health research
Janet Salmons:OK Carla. post any questions here or in the forum, and we will post a linnk to the recording

Tony Carr:Hi to all π
carla:Thanks Janet
Sibongile Simelane:Hi everyone
Janet Salmons:Please introduce yourself, and post questions as we go…
Tony Carr:Tony Carr from Cenre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at UCT, online facilitation/conference network junkie and researcher
Tony Carr:more introductions?
Janet Salmons:yes. I am a junkie too!
Tony Carr:;)
Magda:Magda from Stellenbosch University π
Janet Salmons:Please download the “Enacted Guide” handout
Sibongile Simelane:Im Sibongile from Teaching and Learning with Technology , Tshwane University of Technology
carla:I’m Carla from the Institute of Educatoin – UCL London
Dorothy Ofoha:Dorothy lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria. lecturer at National Open University of Nigeria, a distance learning institution.
Sibongile Simelane:From South Africa Pretoria

Nicola:Better late than never – I am a colleague of Tony and Jakob, pert of e/merge Africa at CILT, UCT
Vicky:Hello everyone …
Vicky:sorry a bit late
Nicola:Greetings Vicky:)
Tony Carr:Welcome Vicky π
Vicky:Thanks π
Tony Carr:someone else here is jumping the slides around sometimes – can we please reflrain from this and let Janet control the slides
Tony Carr:welcome Caroline !
Caroline Chemosit:Thanks. Good to be here.
Tony Carr:continuum between participants being more like research subjects at the top and more like co-researchers at the end of the page?
Kate Whittaker:Hi I’m back.. network at home went down..
Kate Whittaker:sorry to miss out on so much
Nicola:Yes:) Analysing virtual meetings to see who says what, pedagogy of it. Have done research on kids and games, used NodeXL for social network analysis.
Tony Carr:welcome back Kate π
Vicky:Thanks Kate for letting us know about this Seminar.
Nicola:Great – thanks, looks interesting
Sibongile Simelane:My concerned was the ethical issues when collecting data using sociam networks
Tony Carr:http://openwonderland.org/
Tony Carr:Use Open Wonderland to build your virtual world! Create dynamic learning environments, collaborative business applications, or interactive, multi-user simulations.
Nicola:Depends on whether people are identifiable in how you present the data, what you are claiming, etc. See Association for Internet Research RE ethics http://aoir.org/ethics/
Nicola:* In response to Sib earlier
Nicola:Goodie:)
Nicola:To what extent do we create contexts when we use online platforms – could we just be claiming something that actually is a result of our ‘experiment’ or is an outcome of how we used the technology?
Sibongile Simelane:Thanks Nicola anf Tonny. I will follow thelink
Nicola:eg. might just be how the previous person approached use of discussion forum for research, rather than discussion forum as a technique in general
Kate Whittaker:another schroedinger’s cat question, Nicki?
Nicola:by ‘experiment’ I was meaning like constructed nature of the research design
Nicola:awareness of us playing a role in designing these interactions when we use online/digital tools
Nicola:Will go through yesterday’s recording:)
Tony Carr:Thanks for opening up so many approaches to more creative research in and about online environments
Jakob Pedersen:http://bit.ly/1UOZF1P
Caroline Chemosit:Thanks janet for the session; Very insightful.
Kate Whittaker:Thanks for the ideas, links and leads, Janet. I look forward to trying to engage more on the forums. Thanks everyone else, too see you online
Sibongile Simelane:Thank you Janet for the presentation
Nicola:And for being so generous with your resources:)
Vicky:Thanks Janet-

Nicola:wow – awesome
Nicola:I’m so lucky
Janet Salmons:;-)
Nicola:Because I was sad to have missed yesterday

Janet Salmons:its your lucky day πcath
saidAsolutely Janet β Research ethics are always of concern. Thanks for these excellent links and resources which cover not only the aspect at hand but other important linked facets as well. Here in SA we also have to consider the implications of additional facets such as the Protection of Personal Information Act (βPOPIβ) which was signed into law by the President in November 2013. A lot of considerations, but your resources definitely help with clarifying all these issues.
