Welcome everybody to the workshop whether you have a lot of experience or are just getting started with online and blended learning!

Dr Ephraim Mhlanga asserts that “The need to develop a framework for quality assuring technology supported (blended learning) and technology dependent (e-learning) teaching and learning is more pressing now than ever before.” Lets start the seminar by sharing some of our reflections, insights and questions about quality assurance for online learning.

Quality is essential within the teaching and learning domain, if we are to produce students well grounded in the concepts and theories being taught. Without quality metrics, it is difficult to measure the output as fit for purposes for which it was made. Within the f2f domain, there are grounded metric for that mode of delivery which have been developed over the generations. Now with the migration to elearning, we cannot just take f2f quality metrics and dump them in the elearning domain and hope that they will apply. Technology enhanced learning is different from f2f and therefore requires new metrics for the mode to be effective in it’s objectives. Remember that the role of the teacher is fading away into facilitation rather than the preserve of knowledge.
