Jakob Pedersen:I see Alice is coming back
Jakob Pedersen:Alice you with us again?
Irene Maweu:The souns is off completely.
    kolawole:sound is off
    kolawole:back
    Tony Carr:welcome back
Nicola:yes, even in SA when tenders end, underpreivileged schools in urban areas
    Olufemi:Sound is the problem now.
    Irene Maweu:Unsustainability?
Irene Maweu:Olufemi…. Can you please reset your adobe connect and see wht happens?
Irene Maweu:apologies for the lack of sound for olufemi
    Olufemi:sound ok now
    Jakob Pedersen:Great thanks Olufemi
    Irene Maweu:Great to Know @Olufemi
    Irene Maweu:great photo Alice πŸ˜‰
Sipho:Alice did your Organisation volunteer or its part of a Govt initiative?
Tony Carr:Sipho, the initiative was funded by Vodacom
Tony Carr:as part of its community responsiveness initative
Irene Maweu:Was it possible to start with fewer schools?
Elizabeth Maloba:Irene, I was invited via facebook – will it be possible to receive the email so I can access website and do the introduction as you requested? Also will you be sending out these slides – I may have to leave in 30 minutes and would like to review so I cn better contribute to the peer process later this week.
Tony Carr:the easiest thing to do is to distribute computers
    kolawole:you are right Tony
Irene Maweu:elizabeth – Jakob will do it officially. i will send him you email address immediatley…. or i can forward my emails – Now…
    Elizabeth Maloba:either is okay. thanks.
Tony Carr:Elizabeth, you can sign up on http://emergeafrica.net/live or sign in using your Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn ID
Sipho:Thank Tony. Very interesting. I relate to the challenges big time.
kolawole:It is not about computers distribution only but ensuring the workability of the initiatives
Elizabeth Maloba:Thanks Tony. Will do that later this afternoon – let me copy the link
Elizabeth Maloba:are the slides available there to download – just in case I leave before presentation ends?
Jakob Pedersen:Elizabeth we will make Alices slides and the recording of this session available later. This will made available on the ladning page for this seminar – Pls see link in the Note field in a bit
Nicola:Also seen a lab used by parents & community after school
Elizabeth Maloba:Thanks Jakob. Sorry I am asking technical questions very early – but I do knw I have to get away in 20 min or so
Tony Carr:Can we ask you some questions first?
Tony Carr:to understand the situation better?
    Olufemi:Great presentation
    Olufemi:Alice well done
kolawole:Do educators have the required skills to use ICTs
Tony Carr:how connected is the porject to community leadership and stakeholders outside the schools?
Nicola:Nicola, Cape Town, UCT. How do your educators think about the relationship between ICTs and education?
Elizabeth Maloba:Great presentation Alice. Interesting project
    Tony Carr:yes
    Nicola:yes, perfectly:)
Jakob Pedersen:we hear you fine Irene
    Elizabeth Maloba:kolawole – great question
    Olufemi:I can hear you alicebz
Sipho:Interesting initiative and well presented Alice!
Olufemi:Vodacom is a big IT company. What is their input into this? Sufficient?
Nicola:yes, like a benchmark school, have you compared your project to pothers in SA such as the Khanye project?
    alicebz:perhaps?
    Elizabeth Maloba:did we lose Irene?
    alicebz:Yes
    Nicola:no sound…
Jakob Pedersen:Sorry Irene – a break in the sound after perhaps
kolawole:I mean it is not about computers distribution only but focus should be on workability and sustainability of any ICT initiative
Nicola:It was my MA, years ago
Karen Ferreira-Meyers:Back online properly. Trying to catch up on what has been said
Olufemi:On inclination. Do you have a plan for motivating interest?
kolawole:Any ICT policy to ensure and mandate the use of ICT in teaching and learning in south african schools?
Nicola:Once the tender failed, the project sunk so leassons learned there
    Nicola:lessons*
Sipho:The involvement of the community is key to the model…interms of ownership of the project.
Nicola:@Kolawole is interest enough? I met teachers who had intense training, were interested etc. but still the sustainability is not achieved
Nicola:Okay, so maybe Sipho you are asking what should the role of the community be?
Karen Ferreira-Meyers:Are the teachers quoting pedagogical barriers to their use of ICTs?
    Olufemi:Great!!!!!!!!!!! answer
Nicola:yes, sanitation and brick schools number 1
kolawole:As long as there is no policy, educators may not be willing to use ICT for teaching and leraning
Olufemi:Vodacom is a big IT company. What is their input into this? Sufficient?
Karen Ferreira-Meyers:I’m just thinking that if we no the factors for refusal we can introduce training at different levels. But if we have vague answers, then it’s difficult to propose additional interventions, isn’t it?
Nicola:And also ICTs in a lab and number of learners so large, it’s not always possible
    Irene Maweu:Totally lost the connection.
Irene Maweu:Totally lost the connection.I am back.
Nicola:A class may have a 1 hour lesson each week – in your case Alice? How long might each class have in a lab? What are the class sizes like?
    Nicola:Mixed grades, ages, etc?
    Irene Maweu:@ Jakob…. Update please… I am sorry I lost internet
    Nicola:Glad you are back Irene:)
Elizabeth Maloba:Where does the content come from? What is the content they access?
Karen Ferreira-Meyers:Thanks for your response, Alice.
Nicola:Might an innovative teacher award motivate them?
Nicola:Wow – 74 for how many kids at the school?
Jakob Pedersen:Hi Irene we are spreaking about the role of the funder and the role of pedagogy and distribution of technology
    Irene Maweu:thanks Jakob.
Nicola:Can I ask another way, how many times might a grade access the lab in a week
Nicola:Helps us understand scale a bit better
Nicola:Might teachers timetable lessons in the lab? Aaah yes
Elizabeth Maloba:I have to leave – parental resposnibilities. I will listen to the recording and review the slides. I hope to be able to add value at the next session.
Olufemi:Clear but waiting to see the success and further reporting in future
    Tony Carr:thanks Elizabeth
Nicola:Is it just about internet and physical resources are are there other issues why teachers are not using ICTs for lessons? Or is it just about training?
Elizabeth Maloba:1. how long has it been running? How much longer will you be running?
    Elizabeth Maloba:thanks
Irene Maweu:What is being done for susutainability of the project/
Nicola:How would you describe teachers’ perceptions of you and the trust? Do the educators trust you? Do they think you are going to go away?
Nicola:Yes, now they know you are not going to disappear on them
Sipho:Inservice and pre-service training in ICT may help in achieving the sustainability in facilitating the use of ICT.
Irene Maweu:Thank you for the answer on susutatinability?
Tony Carr:Sipho: Inservice and pre-service training in ICT may help in achieving the sustainability in facilitating the use of ICT.
Jakob Pedersen:How much are you engaging with the schools in advising on new ways to teach using ICT?
Jakob Pedersen:Thanks my question in line with Sipho’s
Irene Maweu:As we conclude. any parting shots? Any final comments?
Nicola:So Mama A and not Vodacom? Was wondering, if you start with mobile – it’s their basic internet & tech. Do they perhaps not see the computer labs in the same way? Whereas NGO might be imposing a different kind of basic resource? How they see the relationship between kinds of devices and access – maybe they feel different about these objects which affects how they use them. Start with emotional response which helps understand their attidtude a bit better?
Nicola:Sounds great, I like the sound of ‘earn to learn’
    Nicola:happy to chat:)
Tony Carr:Raise your hand if you want the mike
Olufemi:Thanks and happy to listen to this great idea
    Tony Carr:yes
    Tony Carr:very
    Nicola:sound gone…
Irene Maweu:Sound is gone…. lets see if she comes back
    Olufemi:sound gone
    Tony Carr:Hi Irene
    Nicola:hear you:)
Sipho:In Swaziand we really have a challenge with sustained access to ICT especially in rural areas due to poor connectivity.
Jakob Pedersen:The recording and and text chat transcript and slides will be made available on the seminar landing page: http://bit.ly/1WsOAPE
    Sipho:Great response Alice!
Nicola:I’m just wondering if there’s more to this story than stuff and not having physical resources, skills, etc.
Tony Carr:Thanks Alice! lets keep going in the forum – link from landing page above
Jakob Pedersen:Access to forum via landing page
    Jakob Pedersen:http://bit.ly/1WsOAPE
Irene Maweu:Thank you so soo much Alice for this session. really appreciated

    Jakob Pedersen:Hi Alice and Irene
Jakob Pedersen:Irene thank you for your mail, i am really not sure why you are not allowed to post directly. At the moment I am looking into posting and keeping your nice colour coding
Jakob Pedersen:Ready to test sound when you are πŸ™‚
    alicebz:Hello
alicebz:The problem with posting maybe because she is not signed in?
Irene Maweu:I need to sort out my Mic…
Irene Maweu:I can hear you though
    Irene Maweu:But not Jakob
Jakob Pedersen:I can hear you Alice
    alicebz:JP cant hear you
    alicebz:and havent heard Irene yet
    Jakob Pedersen:Just going check settings
    alicebz:cool
alicebz:Irene does this fit in with the aproach we agreed to take?
    Jakob Pedersen:Hi Kate – welcome!
    alicebz:Hi Kate
Irene Maweu:Yes Alice it fits in what we discussed
Kate Whittaker:Hello Glad I can fit this in.. I still need to listen to the other one
    Irene Maweu:Hallo Kate. Good afternoon.
Kate Whittaker:Sorry I’m at work and someone dropped by to check some minutes
Kate Whittaker:Hello Alice and Irene. I’m looking forward to hearing this
Kate Whittaker:I can hear loud and clear.

Irene Maweu:Yes – its good to have kate
    alicebz:Hi Mo
    mohamed ahmed:thank tony
    mohamed ahmed:thank Jakob, Alice
Irene Maweu:Welcome Mohamed. Glad you could join
    mohamed ahmed:Hi every one
    Jakob Pedersen:Recording now in session
Kate Whittaker:No sorry I couldn’t be I had meetings but I’ve been trying to follow along.
    Nicola:Sorry I’m a bit late – hi everyone:)
    Kate Whittaker:Hi Nicola
    Kate Whittaker:Hi Mohamed
    mohamed ahmed:Ok
    mohamed ahmed:Hi Kate
Irene Maweu:Nice to see Nicola and Kolawole
    kolawole:Hello everybody
    Kate Whittaker:Hi Kolawole
    kolawole:hello kate
Jakob Pedersen:All previous resources available on our landing page: http://bit.ly/1WsOAPE
Irene Maweu:In search os increased access and increased use.
    mohamed ahmed:Thank you Jakob
Kate Whittaker:I seem to have lost my audio so I can’t hear I’m going to log out and return.
Irene Maweu:Sorry kate. That seems to happen.
Irene Maweu:I am hoping you will be back to be part of this Kate
    Nicola:we hear you Irene
    mohamed ahmed:I am here
    kolawole:i can hear you
Irene Maweu:Welcome Esther. Nice to have you here
Esther Gacicio:Thanks Irene. I am late though.
Irene Maweu:Kate – You are back.. Great
kolawole:i quite agree with elizabeth conclusion on leadership. Leadrrship is key. If leadership is not intersted in the initiative then it s success may be jeopardised. On the other hand, people that will lead the integration of ICT must also be interested and possess the necessary skills.
Kate Whittaker:I’m afraid I still can’t hear so I will type
Nicola:that probably spills into the ICTs – feeling that it’s given, not really theirs?
Irene Maweu:I am sorry Kate that you cant hear. Have you turned on the Mic at the top? some times it needs your computer to allow it on.
    Kate Whittaker:yes
    Kate Whittaker:I have
    Kate Whittaker:I’ll keep trying
kolawole:Most times, developing countries put people with lack of interest and skills in ICT in charge of ICT integration in schools. iI cant’t imaginr how any success will be recorded in such situation
Esther Gacicio:How do we get the communities to buy into this initaiative?
    Nicola:land of game reserves
    Nicola:how they feel yes
    Esther Gacicio:Yes it does thanks.
Esther Gacicio:It is a very good way as opposed to where you get the community in a one off and expect them to buy inot your idea. Thanks Alice, quite a good insight there.
Nicola:is it perhaps abotu social innovation, not just technological, the wicked problem might not be the devices but the relationships people have in the area with resources more generally? And shifting that is harder than getting physical ICTs in schools. I’m sensing a reliance on paternalism in this context, probably similar to missionaries and literacy, like you mention, very politicised
Esther Gacicio:Building relationship is very key i like that, they trust the trust.
    kolawole:Nice one
Irene Maweu:Trust the Turst – Nice
Esther Gacicio:Those manning the labs I suppose are drawn from the community as well.
Nicola:I like what you say, not just about getting, community must make inputs, put in effort to gain
    kolawole:yes
    Esther Gacicio:Great.
Nicola:teach them to teach too perhaps? Train them to train (the kids from community who are employed to support)
Esther Gacicio:Thanks Alice. Thats what has made it successful and sustainable.
    Nicola:okay cool 0 cab do:)
    Nicola:can*
    Nicola:sure
    Jakob Pedersen:yes Nicola
    Esther Gacicio:Yes Nicola.
    Irene Maweu:Kate… are youstill there?
Nicola:very interesting part of the context that impacts on the sustainability I think hey?
Kate Whittaker:YEs but I still can’t hear! I have now tried all the help
Kate Whittaker:and guidance I may have to simply listen to the recording and add my further commetns on the site
    Nicola:thank you:) makes sense
Irene Maweu:That would be fantastic. You can also join in the forum discussions Kate
    Nicola:Cool:)
Nicola:Maybe we put uBuntu in this sustainable model?
    Irene Maweu:Final comments and inputs?
Nicola:make relationships and ‘a quality that includes the essential human virtues; compassion and humanity’ key:)
Kate Whittaker:one thing that strikes me despite the fact that I can’t hear is have you heard of the Penryn School and outreach ?
Kate Whittaker:I think they are in your area geographically and whilst they are a private school they have an outreach trust which I believe have also engaged in facilitating access for the broader community to a number of resources at the school including ICT trainig and facilities
    Kate Whittaker:http://www.penreach.org.za/
Nicola:mine wasn’t a question, just a comment RE ubuntu, also to clarify meaning for non-SA folks
alicebz:Yes Kate…. I know and work with David Wylde
    Kate Whittaker:ah
    Kate Whittaker:ok
Jakob Pedersen:Interesting perspective re the shift from philantropic / paternalistic to mutually based. I feel the Eurocentric apporach is very much standard thinking when it comes to Euro-African thinking
    Jakob Pedersen:pardon the spelling
Esther Gacicio:Thanks. It has been very informative though I didnt attend the earlier session. Thanks Alice, so much to borrow from you.
Nicola:maybe we more sensitive to this stuff now following fees must fall and drive to decolonise spaces
alicebz:Yes Nicola and JP I agree
Kate Whittaker:dare I say that its not just Eurocentric? Many traditional socieities (globally) have a patriachal power base even if the hidden power rests elsewhere.. sounds as though there is scope to build a lot more community ownership
Nicola:True Kate, eish this power stuff
Jakob Pedersen:I think there is a bit of delay
    Esther Gacicio:Yes Alice.
    Jakob Pedersen:yes alice πŸ™‚
    Esther Gacicio:Yes we can
    Jakob Pedersen:Pleas ALice go ahead
    alicebz:They can hear me
    Nicola:comes and goes A
    Nicola:perfect now
Nicola:Irene maybe mute yours when A talks?
alicebz:Ok let me say it in the chat.
Esther Gacicio:You bothe have the mics on A and Irene.
alicebz:Thanks so much for all the inputs and questions – it will contribute towards the Trust’s further thinking around the planning and implementation of its ccommunity development projects using ICTs as a tool to develop localised solutions!!!
    kolawole:ok
alicebz:Let’s continue the conversation in the discussion forum and facebook!
Nicola:my takeaway is that it’s not all about the tech and there is a lot that other initiatives can learn from what the trust is doing:)
    kolawole:u are welcome
    kolawole:Bye
alicebz:Yes its not all about technology πŸ™‚
    alicebz:Bye Kolawole and thank you
    alicebz:Kate we can Skype sometime?
    Kate Whittaker:Yes with pleasure.
Esther Gacicio:Bye. In another meeting shortly. Thanks so much for all.
    alicebz:alicebz1
    mohamed ahmed:sorry Internet problem
Jakob Pedersen:Thank you all – chat transcript and recording will made available on our landing page http://bit.ly/1WsOAPE
Kate Whittaker:when would work for you?
    Kate Whittaker:kate.whittaker3
    alicebz:Sorry Mo
    alicebz:Great
mohamed ahmed:we can speak on the skype Alice
Nicola:Thanks a million Alice and Irene:) sketchnote on the way
Jakob Pedersen:Please contibue this conversation in the discussion forum (access via the landing page)
    alicebz:Thanks JP
    alicebz:Great stuff Nicola!!!
Kate Whittaker:love your sketchnotes.. the other one helped me get the nuggets quickly…
    alicebz:Mohamed yes.
    mohamed ahmed:Ok, great
Kate Whittaker:but now I need to practice my deep listening and play the recording πŸ˜‰
Nicola:Pleasure – thank you for stimulating those brain cells and for getting us to think critically
    alicebz:Hehehe … enjoy
Nicola:Glad you found the last sketchnote useful Kate:)
alicebz:Thanks Nicola I love those sketchnotes
alicebz:Bye everyone and once again thank you so much
Nicola:Bye everyone – catch you on Facebook:)
    mohamed ahmed:Thanks Alice,.
    Kate Whittaker:bye
    Irene Maweu 2:Bye everyone
